Assistance related to UWV (WW, WIA, Wazo, ZW)
UWV is the agency in the Netherlands responsible for benefits when work is interrupted or life circumstances change. Unemployment, illness, pregnancy, long-term incapacity for work. This is when UWV comes into play, and very often stress, uncertainty, and questions that are difficult to answer clearly.
Many people contact us with these matters, because a single letter from UWV can have a real impact on monthly income and sense of security.
What UWV does
UWV is responsible for paying various benefits related to work and the ability to perform it. This agency analyzes employment history, type of contract, periods of illness, and whether a person meets specific statutory conditions.
Many UWV decisions are based on data from months or even years ago, so the absence of a single document can completely change the outcome of a case.
WW – unemployment benefit
WW is available to people who have lost their job through no fault of their own and have worked for a sufficiently long period. Interestingly, the amount and duration of the benefit depend on employment history, not just the last contract.
In practice, many people do not realize that the manner in which the contract ends is extremely important. The difference between contract expiration and termination at one’s own request can determine entitlement to WW or the lack thereof.
ZW – sickness benefit from UWV
Ziektewet applies to people who are ill but do not have an employer paying sick pay. These are most often temporary workers, people on short-term contracts, or people whose contract ended during illness.
Many people are surprised that after the contract ends, they may still be entitled to a benefit, but only if the matter has been properly reported and documented.
WIA – long-term incapacity for work
WIA applies to people who, after a prolonged period of illness, are unable to return to work or can only work to a limited extent. This is one of the more complex benefits, because UWV assesses not only health status but also earning capacity.
A common surprise is that even with serious health problems, UWV may determine that a person is partially capable of working, which affects the benefit amount.
WAZO – family-related benefits
WAZO includes benefits related to pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare, among others. It applies to both mothers and fathers, as well as self-employed individuals.
In practice, many people do not know that some benefits are also available to self-employed persons or that reporting deadlines are crucial for payment.
Why UWV matters are often difficult
UWV operates on the basis of regulations and procedures that are not always clear to people outside the system. Decisions can be lengthy, letters complicated, and deadlines short. It also happens that the agency returns to matters from months ago and requests additional clarification.
Many problems start with unintentional errors, not bad intentions.
What is our role
People contact us to verify their entitlement to benefits, organize documents, or understand a UWV decision. We explain what the letters mean, what the agency pays attention to, and how to safely navigate the entire procedure.
Often, at an early stage, problems that would otherwise drag on for months can be avoided.
