Child benefit (Kindgebonden budget)

Raising a child in the Netherlands involves significant costs. Therefore, the state offers additional financial support for families, known as the kindgebonden budget. This benefit is intended to help with daily expenses related to raising a child and ensuring stable living conditions for them.

For many families, this is a real support for the household budget, but it is also one of those benefits where misunderstandings and errors can easily occur.

What is the kindgebonden budget?

The kindgebonden budget is a child allowance paid to families who meet specific income and family conditions. This benefit is an addition to the kinderbijslag, and its amount depends, among other factors, on the parents’ income, the number of children, and the child’s age.

The lower the income and the more children in the family, the higher the support may be. In practice, however, every situation is different, and many families are unsure whether they are entitled to the benefit and in what amount.

What has changed since 2026

Since 2026, the kindgebonden budget system has been better adapted to the real situation of families. The changes aim to increase the accessibility of the benefit and better align its amount with current incomes.

Greater emphasis has been placed on the family’s actual financial situation, not just on data from previous years. As a result, families whose incomes change during the year have a better chance of receiving support that matches their current needs.

At the same time, the system detects discrepancies more quickly, which means that data accuracy is even more important than before.

Who is most often entitled to the kindgebonden budget?

This subsidy primarily benefits low- and middle-income families, single parents, and families where one parent works part-time or incomes are irregular.

In practice, many families forgo the benefit because they are unsure of their situation or fear later corrections. However, it often turns out that the support was indeed due to them.

The safest option is to settle after a year

As with other benefits, the safest way to obtain the kindgebonden budget is to settle for the previous year, when all incomes are already known. This ensures that the amount of the benefit is based on actual data, not forecasts.

However, it is important to adhere to deadlines. An application for the benefit for a given year can only be submitted until a specific date in the following year. After this deadline, the possibility of obtaining the subsidy for the past year is lost, even if the family met all the conditions.

Why it is worth having it thoroughly checked

The kindgebonden budget often involves significant amounts annually. Errors in income or family composition can result in the need to repay money or the loss of part of the benefit.

On the other hand, many families lose support simply because no one calmly and stress-free checked their situation.
