Obtaining DigiD
DigiD is a digital identity in the Netherlands. It is a personal login that allows you to handle official matters online. Without DigiD, many matters are simply not possible or require visits, phone calls, and paper correspondence.
For people living in the Netherlands, DigiD is one of the most important administrative tools.
What is DigiD
DigiD is an electronic identification system used by Dutch public institutions. It works as a secure login that confirms your identity when dealing with government authorities.
DigiD is assigned to a specific person and cannot be shared with anyone else.
What is DigiD used for
DigiD is required for, among other things:
- contact with government authorities
- tax settlement in the Netherlands
- toeslagen matters such as huurtoeslag or zorgtoeslag
- matters related to UWV and SVB
- contact with the municipality
- health and insurance matters
In practice, DigiD is the key to most official matters in the Netherlands.
Why DigiD can be problematic
Although the system itself is meant to make life easier, many people encounter difficulties already at the stage of obtaining DigiD. Problems arise during data verification, receiving the activation code, changing address, or when DigiD expires or becomes blocked.
A common problem is also the language barrier or uncertainty about whether everything has been activated correctly.
When DigiD is absolutely essential
Without DigiD, it is not possible to submit many applications online or check official decisions. In practice, this means delays in settlements, lack of access to information, or the necessity of personal contact with the office.
For people working or living in the Netherlands, the lack of DigiD very quickly becomes a real problem.
What is our role
