The safest option is to settle after the previous year

The safest way to receive the correct benefit is to obtain it for the previous year, when all your income is already known and confirmed. In such a situation, the allowance is calculated based on actual income, not just estimates. This often means you receive exactly what you are entitled to, without later having to repay overpaid amounts or make additional payments.

To benefit from this, you must remember the application deadline. You can apply for the allowance for a specific tax year until September 1st of the year following the year to which the benefit applies. For example, for the year 2025, you can still submit an application until September 1st, 2026. If this deadline passes, you lose the opportunity to receive the allowance for that year, even if you met the conditions.

The healthcare allowance is most often used by people working for minimum and average wages, those starting work in the Netherlands, singles, students, and individuals whose income changes during the year.
