Obtaining a BSN number
The BSN number is one of the most important numbers in the Netherlands. Without it, normal functioning is practically impossible. It is required for work, taxes, health insurance, contact with authorities, and many other administrative matters.
For individuals who are just arriving in the Netherlands or starting work here, the BSN is an absolute necessity.
What is a BSN number
The BSN is a personal identification number assigned to every person registered in the Netherlands. It is the equivalent of the PESEL number and serves for identification in contact with public institutions.
The BSN number is assigned to one person and remains with them permanently, even if their address or life situation changes.
What is the BSN needed for
The BSN number is required for, among other things:
- taking up legal employment
- tax settlement
- obtaining health insurance
- using DigiD
- contact with government authorities
- opening a bank account
In practice, the absence of a BSN blocks most formal matters in the Netherlands.
How and when is the BSN assigned
The BSN number is assigned upon registration with the municipality. This typically occurs when a person registers their residence in the Netherlands or registers as someone arriving for work.
The moment of obtaining the BSN is significant, as tax and administrative obligations begin from that date.
Why the BSN can be a source of problems
Problems arise when data has been provided incorrectly, the address has changed, or registration has not been completed. It also happens that individuals are working but do not know whether their BSN is active and correctly assigned.
A common problem is also the lack of registration, which hinders or delays obtaining the number.
What is our role
We assist in preparing for obtaining the BSN, explain what data is required, and what to pay attention to. In case of problems, we help clarify and resolve them so that the BSN number is assigned correctly and without errors.
